Tony had a condition called Ketoacidosis. We had NO idea he was even diabetic until last Thursday, the 19th. He got sick at work, and they called me out there. LONGEST DRIVE EVER, because I had NO clue what was going on.
They said he was type 2 diabetic and sent him home with a pill, instead of insulin.
Pill did NOT work and he developed a horrible rash.
We made it through the weekend (LITERALLY BY THE GRACE OF GOD).
He went to his Dr. on Monday morning, and they were just going to admit him. WRONG.
The "hospitialist"<---- (I love that word lol) came in and saw him and proceeded to scare the crap out of me.
She was in a frenzy to get him to ICU.
When I finally talked to her, she said she's never seen a patient come in, in his condition still alive.
According to his blood work, he wasn't even supposed to be ALIVE.
Tony is now out of ICU and doing very well. I hope to have him home soon.
God is GOOD and I KNOW prayer changes things!!!!!!
(He looks SO much better than this tonight)
I can't even beging t tell y'all how thankful I am for all of the prayers, well wishes, kind thoughts, emails, texts, everything. It truly made the difference. I appreciate yall so much. Your kindness will NEVER EVER be forgotten.
I'm so glad Tony's health is improving. I'll continue to pray for him until he's 100 percent. Yes, prayer does change things for those who know Him and believe in Him. God IS so good. I pray strength for you and the rest of your family as you care for your loved one and for one another. God Bless.

I Praise the Lord that Tony is going to be ok. I have a friend that was in the ICU and was in Ketoacidosis. Her husband didn't know it because the people at the hospital didn't tell him. She was in ICU too, but she wasn't totally aware for a little while. But now she's doing great! That was in 06.
GET WELL Tony:)

Tony must be a very strong man, so he'll be ok. I hope he will be able to come home soon. He looks like a sad, little puppy on that picture but I'm glad to hear he's doing much better already.
Hope you are all doing ok. This must have scared the hell out of you.

Oh my goodness, what a scare. He is lucky that hospitalist knew what she was dealing with and put him straight into ICU, she probably saved his life! Thinking of you both tonight and sending prayers for a fast recovery from the other side of the world. God bless you both.

What a testimony! I love it when God shows out and makes the medical folks wonder. He should have been dead according to them, but God had other plans. I'm glad he's doing better. I'm praying for a full recovery.

Wow, that diagnosis is so common, especially in patients that don't even know they are diabetic. Being on an insulin drip with hourly-or even more often blood glucose checks are not fun, for the nurse or the pt. I'll bet his finger tips sure hurt. You probably have already started learning a new language by now. Hopefully your hospital has a good diabetes educator--they can be worth their weight in gold.
Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Will also be interested to know what his HbA1C lab value is.
HUGS to all of you!

We found out two years ago my husband was diabetic. He lost thrity pounds in three weeks and kept getting sick. I finally just had to get angry at him to get him to go to doctor. His glucose was 440. He went to family doctor and it was not coming under control. Went to endroconoligist and he started him on insulin and had it control in no time. He's off insulin now and his AC1 has been under 6 the last 9 months. He's still on oral meds but loves not having to take shots. The best money we spent was going to Diabeties classes, it really helps to have diet explained because so much on internet is wrong or not current. Please consider taking these classes it really helps. So glad Tony is better. Take care.

Praise GOD! I've been watching your blog daily for an update.
I just recently found out my friend's daughter (or as my kids say, my 5 year old "cooking buddy") has diabetes". I've been learning how to monitor her, etc. She was worried we wouldn't be able to cook together anymore since we always did cookies. So she & I have been learning about "healthier" ways to cook.
I know that Tony will continue to improve. May God's graces continue to be with your family.

You should have told the "hospitalist," well, according to how Jesus works, we'll only be here for a little while cause Tony and done here yet.
Posted by: Buttahfly | August 27, 2010 at 03:03 PM
I don't know about that "sent him home with a pill" business but it isn't the pill that controls diabetes, you have to know what you are doing so that was a disgrace. He should be in hospital for a few days to stabilize his blood sugar.
You should both see a dietician ('cos he's going to need your hep and the kids' help)who will explain what he can eat and how much of it and what to avoid or have less of. You should come home with a sheaf of papers about helpings of carbohydrate, etc. And a sample diet sheet for a week, preferably a month. Insist on it!
I have had diabetes Type 1 for over forty years and my dad has Type 2. It's really tough to accept at first, but once you accept it and get the hang of it (=eat right and exercise regularly, ie what we all should do but usually don't), it can actually help you to stay healthier and you can feel fine again. But you know, you all might feel some rage at first! But it works out OK in the end, honest.
The advice about diabetes ed class is good too. Learning how to balance your food and meds is vital and makes everything soooo much easier. But I would say to follow a diet sheet for a month till you all feel a bit calmer!
