This top photo is for Jaelyn's Quilt. She does NOT like pink but she does like yellow and orange so I decided on those colors for her. I'm going to make her the stacked coins quilt. You can see a gazillion of them here. I seriously blame flickr for making me want to do this quilt lol.
Kayla loves all things pink and green so I decided on this fabric. I still have to get the fabric for the back and the sashing but I'll get that when I'm close to being finished with Jaelyn's quilt.
Oh, I will be making Avalon by Kathy Doughty for her. I think it will be perfect and simple lol.
Let's talk fabric. OK....Now I sew so I KNOW all fabric isn't created equal. Let me tell you. Kayla's fabric is by Heather Bailey. It's the freespirit line. I ordered it from www.twiddletails.com THIS STUFF FEELS SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!! I was NOT expecting that when I opened the package!!!
Jaelyn's fabric I got from Walmart and Hancock. It does NOT feel like the Heather Bailey fabric! AT ALL. It doesn't even LOOK the same lol.
I don't know WHAT the thread count is but I don't think I want to use anything else from now on lol.
It's almost like sheets lol. When I purchase sheets for my bed, I would really just buy a set of sheets. Pick em up and go. Once I learned about high threadcount sheets? It was OVER. I don't buy anything less than 1000 count for my bed lol.
That is what this fabric is like. The walmart/hancock fabric feels like 200 threadcount sheets and the Heather Bailey feels like 1000 threadcount sheets. I KID YOU NOT.
There is NOTHING wrong with hancock/walmart fabric OR 200 or 300 threadcount sheets if that is what YOU like lol. I'm just saying I LOVE this Heather Bailey fabric! LOL
Since these quilts will be gifts, I will only work on them while the kids are in school. I plan on starting on Jaelyn's next week.
Alrighty guys, that is all I have! LOL
Enjoy your day and stay safe!
Toodles!
Chile, quilt shops will tell you quick there is a difference...you have made some nice choices...I would love to see the finished product..

I hope that you feel better soon. I love the colors of the fabrics.

Beautiful fabric choices. You have two lucky girls. I know what you mean about high quality quilting fabrics. I'm working on my first quilt (for my son). It's ok... but I have to say I prefer sewing clothes. :-)

The color palates you have put together for both quilts are fantastic. I've been quilting for many years, and yes, there is a big difference in the quality of the fabric from "discount" places such as Walmart, Joann, and Hancock versus the quilt shops. I am regularly disappointed with the poor quality and durability of the "cheap" fabric, and have yet to be disappointed by the quilt shop fabric. I am lucky to be in central Ohio because we have lots of quilt shops here. Now decent fashion fabric shops...I am still waiting!

My daughter hate pink too. I think I put too much on her when she was little. She can't STAND it. I love orange and yellows. Can't wait to see the finished quilts.

Those are going to be some beautiful quilts.

Girl, what do you DON'T do?! LOL
I'm already in love with Jaelyn's quilt! Can't wait to see the finished product.

My favorite quilt fabrics come from Michael Miller. I'm in love with Patty Young's Mezzane, Sandie Henderson's Famers Market, and Paula Prass's Summer Soire'. There is also Robert Kaufman, Moda....and I could go on and on!! But seriously Order a Hancock's of Paducah Catalog so you can get a great visual.

Aw Lawd..I wish I had not seen all the Stacked Coin quilts on Flickr..now I'm itching to get at my quilting fabrics that have gone untouched for sooo long! You have chosen some beautiful fabrics! There definitely is no comparison to high quality quilting fabric to Walmart's selection..in my area all Walmart's have phased out every last bit of anything related to sewing. :(
Happy Sewing, Adrienne!

Nice fabric selections on both. Can't wait to see how they turn out. I lurve Heather Bailey. I pretty much like all Free Spirit fabrics. And Westminster, Robert Kaufman, Moda. I could go on...LOL

Lovely colors for the quilts you're making. I'm excited to see how yours come out. I think I like the "coins" one best.
Good Luck!

I love the colors you picked for the quilts . But don't start another hobby. Till I have a chance to keep up with you. I always wanted to make a quilt. I am going to the library today to pick up a book and Joanns is having a 1/2 off sale on classes in Oct so the quilting class will be $15 right up my alley I hope my quilt turns up half as good as yours,

We have a sewing center out here that sells some premo stuff. They specialize in quilts so I guess they have to. But, at $10 a yd, it's not always economical for my childs dresses. I think since many quilts are handed down, the investment would be worth it. Going to check out twiddletails. Hope I don't get into more sewing trouble than I already have today.
Oh yes, I found some stuff I was satisfied with at JoAnns, it was their high end brand. It still wasn't the same as that other pkace. I lurvs me some coupons so I guess I'mma keep going there for now, lol.

They will be wonderful treasures... I love to quilt...

I love your color choices and I know both girls are going to love their quilts. I totally know what you are talking about in regards to the fabric. I went to my first quilt shop on Wednesday during an outing with one of my friends. I purchased the pattern for Amy Butler's Betty Shopper and I also purchased the fabric for it while I was there. It's like butter, and the patterns are gorgeous. I couldn't purchase this stuff at JoAnn's.

I agree, there is a BIG difference in quilting fabric over fabrics you buy at Walmart and such. I had a ton of fabric that I loved the design of (and bought before I knew about quality fabrics) but have decided to get rid of because I want the things I make to last! You made some great choices!
Posted by: Penny | August 29, 2009 at 02:46 PM
OHH yes there is a HUGE diff in fabrics!! And in how they wear too! Ya get what you pay for generally! Even if go through the quilt dept at JoAnn's and just run your hands over the fabric you can guess what is the cheapo stuff and what is more expensive..then go to a quilt shop..and yup even nicer there. I don't remember now but there is a word (something like greygoods) for how fabrics are rated...very similar to thread count! Love the colors you chose for both quilts!

Thank you so much for your birthday wishes! It was a great birthday!
I can't believe how much you sew! I'm just starting out in this sewing business, but I'm truly loving it. I wish I had someone like you next door to enjoy it with. Where I'm at, it's like a lost art. Not too many like to sew!
The stacked coin quilt is one of the one's I'm really hoping to do soon. They have a tutorial on the Moda Bake Shop. (I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's awesome! All sorts of tutorials for all kinds of things sewing!) They're using Soiree in their tutorial and I have got to get me some! It was beautiful!
I want to see how your quilts look when they are done! Should be stunning! And boy do I know what you mean on the feel of the material. Once you have the good stuff, you never want to go back!!

Just stopping in from BEM's blog. I am very new to this quilting game, but yeah...I have a whole stack of Joanns fabric glaring at me. I just finished using some Moda fabric and you're right. There's a HUGE difference. Love your fabrics!
