I figured I may as well answer them lol.
My Answers.....
I don't see anything wrong with shortcuts. I guess it just depends on what the shortcut is!?
I don't always cut out my notches when sewing. That is a shortcut to me lol.
I think making BWOF patterns make you think more. Their instructions or lack therof are awful lol.
My projects are NEVER perfect. I always see something (even if no one else can see it) that I could have done better. Anything that is NOT RIGHT , will make me rip out. I am SO TYPE A WHEN I AM SEWING LOL.
I think I am really good at sewing knits. I LOVE knits and I sew a LOT Of them.
I'm weak with buttonholes (strange right lol), welt pockets and HEMMING! I HATE TO HEM!!! I'm sure there are more things as I'm not perfect but I'm learning all the time.
I will make a TNT until I am just sick of it. It always looks different with different fabric.
Stash. I think everyone is different. What may be too much for me might not be too much for you. I've bought so much fabric in the last couple of weeks I don't have a DESIRE to buy anything else right now lol. That is SO subject to change lol.
I cut out a top and the fabric was folded under the pattern and i didn't know it lol. THAT was almost a disaster lol.
I don't dwell on my goof ups anymore lol. It's just fabric. I will toss it and move on lol.
I have a LOT of patterns and I'm always buying more. I want to catalog all the ones I have. I plan on doing that this summer.
My process....I pick my pattern first SOMETIMES I will pick my fabric first....cut out the pattern, cut out the fabric then sew lol. Simple.
I don't see ANYTHING wrong with being inspired by celebs or people in general. Inspiration is a great thing!
I LOVE honest feedback when it comes to my sewing. I'm trying to improve and I think that everyone knows and can see different things so I appreciate it. I'd rather someone be honest and tell me I look a hot mess than have me thinking I look superb in something that I've made that is jacked up lol.
Ok. I think that's it lol
Toodles!
That's more like an essay lol. I catalog my patterns and currently have over 250, I need to stop. I do like to receive input/critism about my projects sometimes it stings but overall its very helpful. The shortcuts I take are, I never make a muslin, I don't get that unless it's a wearable muslin, marking a pattern right after cutting it out and I should have learned by now it always causes problems, I'm getting a little better. I know I missed some but I will submit my completed essay at a later date, I hope you don't take points off.

Welllll I don't know how to use my blind hem on my sewing machine.Don't tell! And I only use the big 4 they have made me a better sewer.Girl I couldn't tell you how many patterns I have.Thats why I put myself on a pattern diet last summer and I am going to do it again this summer. Those patterns adds up!I am always doing ripouts and I think some of the best sewers do also sometimes.Never made jeans, but would love to try one day.My fabric stash is too large some of the fabric I have I have to ask myself WHY YOU GET THAT FABRIC!LOL

Great questions! I'll be back to let you know when I post the answers on my blog. I can tell you already, my answers will be loooong. lol!

I am going to follow "2BSewing" and agree all those questions are great and I will also post on my blog. I am very interested in knowing what your plan is for cataloging your patterns...something tells me it will be a plan I'll want to follow!

Great Post. As for shortcuts, like Tanya, I hate doing muslins. I am with you on sewing knits...just love them and not have to worry about ease. I love making tops, preferrably the patterns with only 4 pieces...lol. You know I will work a pattern to death if I love it. Blind hem..ummm Nerp. If one loves to sew... there is no such thing as too much stash. I've lost count on how many patterns I have, but will say I just added 13 more after catching JoAnn's .99 sale. My weakest link...hehe is working with wovens. I need all the advice and constructive critisim I can get, I believe it helps tremendously on future projects.
Posted by: sheila | April 29, 2009 at 08:03 AM
I don't think about short cuts, if I know an easier way to do something I just do it. I believe the instructions are written mainly for a quick reference, most garments are made the same. I've been sewing for a long time and have never used a BWOF or Jailee pattern so I don't think they would make me a better sewer. When it comes to ripping OMG! My mom is always in the back of my head when I sew. If I do something I know she would complain about later, it bothers me so much I have to rip it out and do it over. Sometimes I call her and ask her to leave me alone and let me sew in peace, she replys what did you do have to rip something out. We both get a good laugh. Criticism is good, I was almost finished a knit top last winter, my husband saw me trying it on and asked you're not wearing that are you? You know it went right in the trash, no questions asked. I HATE HEMMING TOO. I use my blind hem alot, mainly with clear thread, it takes some practice. I have patterns dating back ot the early 80's, don't ask me why I'm still saving them I'll never get back to that size again. I'm working on the fifth drawer of a file cabent each drawer has three rows across, not counting the childrens patterns in boxes:) NO stash is to big.

Do you think clothes are made better if you don't take shortcuts?? Not necessarily -- it depends on the shortcuts. There are many ways to "git 'er done". I use whichever ones are the easiest.
What kind of shortcuts do you take when sewing if any? IF I THINK THE PATTERN COMPANY HAS MADE A STEP HARDER THAN IT SHOULD BE, THEN YES, I TAKE SHORTCUTS. I ALSO ELIMATE ELEMENTS I DON'T LIKE
Does making BWOF instead of something from the Big 4 make you a better sewer? NO.
Are your projects perfect? HAH HAH HAH!! What will make you rip out and start again?? REALLY BAD TOP STITCHING, A SLEEVE INSERTED THE WRONG WAY. ASSEMBLING A GARMENT INCORRECTLY.
What are you best at when it comes to sewing? MAKING STUPID MISTAKES
what is your weak point? PATIENCE
How many times will you make a TNT? UNTIL I GET BORED WITH IT. IF I LIKE IT -- THEN ONE IN EVERY COLOR IMAGINABLE -- JUST LIKE A PAIR OF COMFORTABLE SHOES OR A COMFY T-SHIRT/TANK.
What tips do you have for making jeans?! I'm about to make the Jalie pattern. SOON lol. GO SLOW AND YOU'LL WIN THE RACE. MAKING JEANS IS JUST LIKE MAKING PANTS, WITH MORE TOPSTITCHING AND A COIN POCKET!
Do you use the blind hem feature on your machine!? I can't get mine to work right. User error probably. YES, I DO FROM TIME TO TIME, WHEN I REMEMBER.
Is there a such thing as too much stash!?!? I'M GOING TO HAVE TO SAY "NO" OTHERWISE THE AMOUNT OF FABRIC IN MY HOME MAKES ME INSANE, LIKE THE CRAZY CAT LADY.
What has been the worse thing you have done while sewing something? SEWED MY FINGER TO THE FABRIC WHILE HAND SEWING COMES TO MIND. SEWING THE SLEEVES WRONG SIDE OUT. Could you save your project? YES, I TURNED IT INTO A DESIGN FEATURE BY ADDING TRIM. I ACTUALLY LIKED IT BETTER THAT WAY. I ALSO CUT OUT 7 PAIRS OF BOXERS FOR HUBBY WITH TWO RIGHT SIDES. NO FIX THERE -- I JUST MADE THEM INTO PULL ON SHORTS FOR ME.
When you mess up a project, do you feel bad or do you just move on? DEPENDS ON THE FABRIC. IF I LOVE THE FABRIC, THEN I GET DISGUSTED WITH MYSELF, TOSS IT IN THE UFO PILE AND MOVE ON. AT SOME POINT, I'LL GO BACK AND REUSE THE FABRIC FOR SOMETHIGN ELSE.
How many patterns do you have!?!? HAH! I HAVEN'T BOTHERED TO COUNT. LIKE MY FABRIC COLLECTION, THE PATTERNS MULTIPLY IN THE DARK. IT'S DEFNITELY IN THE HUNDREDS.
What is your sewing process!? I SPEND TOO MUCH TIME THINKING, BUT EVENTUALLY, I DECIDE ON A PROJECT. I READ THE DIRECTIONS 2 TO 3 TIMES AND THEN GET DOWN TO THE BUSINESS OF CUTTING. I MAKE A POINT OF READING INSTRUCTIONS SLOWLY, MAKING CHANGES IF THEY ARE STUPID AND PINNING LIKE CRAZY. I SPEND THE EVENINGS, ONCE THE MACHINE IS TURNED OFF, READING THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NEXT STEP(S).
Is there wrong with being inspired by celebs?? I am currently being inspired by Michelle Obama lol. I love everything about her. NOT AT ALL. SOME OF THEM ACTUALLY HAVE IT "GOIN' ON."
Do you offer advice on other peoples projects?? YES.
Do you accept advice/ constructive critisim on your projects?? ABSOLUTELY.
Do you think it makes you a better sewer??? YES, DEFINITELY.

I USED to sew clothing but do not anymore and haven't in such awhile b/c I am afraid of making mistakes (oh and lazy at times). It was GREAT to see your answers and the responses you received. However, I have been doing some quilting and I can relate to some of the answers/questions. For ex.. STASH. I've slowly built one up and I feel the same as you. As for mistakes... I tend to rip and repeat if necessary. I hate notches and HEMMING. Wow.. you're timing is so on point. Just last night, I was just looking at 3 items I started and didn't complete. 2 of them are skirts! How hard can it be to finish. Geesh. You've made me want to finish and move on. Have a great day.

I love shortcuts when sewing but I don't always take them, a couple of my "short cuts" have ended up with the projects in the garbage.
I love making my garments as simple as possible, I will eliminate a zipper in a minute if I can get away with it!
I'm deathly afraid of BWOF, so I refuse.
My projects are never perfect, and just yesterday my poor, poor boyfriend sat at the table and helped me rip the seam out of the maxi dress I was making for the One Knit contest. If I don't get it right tonight in the trash it goes and no contest for me.
I think I do an excellent job at cutting out my patterns and the material.
My weak point is understanding the directions provided by the pattern company.
I will make my TNT pattern until I get tired of wearing example...my maxi dress!
The only tip I can give you on making jeans is use jean material with stretch. LOL!
There is NO SUCH THING as TOO MUCH STASH EVER!
The worst thing I've done while sewing was consume alcohol while talking to my retarded sisters...not a good mix. LOL!
When I mess up a sewing project I am hard on myself, and I always think, I'll never be as good as so and so, then I say F*@# It toss it and move on to the next project.
I think I have every plus size pattern ever made, I've even gone on ebay and ordered out of print patterns.
My sewing process, I visit Igigi.com see something I like, if I can afford it I buy it LOL if not I print a picture visit the big four websites find the pattern, if it's in the stash good if not I buy it, then I fabric shop if nothing is in the stash. I cut, fit, adjust, cut some more then sew.
I love Michelle and other fashionable inspirational people! and if their style works for me then I use it!
I'm not all that good at sewing so I don't offer advice on others projects.
I'm too shame to post pictures of my projects because I'm not ready to accept criticism. LMAO!
I know when I start posting those pictures and open it up for criticism it will make me a better sewer1 LMAOOO~

Do you think clothes are made better if you don't take shortcuts??
I think it depends on the shortcut but sometimes shortcuts are better.
What kind of shortcuts do you take when sewing if any?
I used to not make Muslins but found that they help me to at least not be so nervous about cutting into the fabric.
Does making BWOF instead of something from the Big 4 make you a better sewer?
Definitely not
Are your projects perfect? Never
What will make you rip out and start again?? If the fit is off or I did something totally wrong. Otherwise I hate ripping. It has made me stop one project and begin another. (Not Good LOL!!)
What are you best at when it comes to sewing? As of recently it has been making Muslins!!! LOL
what is your weak point?
Definitely pants and pockets.
How many times will you make a TNT?
Dont know, dont have one yet!!
What tips do you have for making jeans?!
I have the Jalie pattern too and cant wait to see how yours turn out and get pointers. I dont have a clue bought the fabric though!!LOL
Do you use the blind hem feature on your machine!?
I have but need much much more practice. But I dont want to take the time to do it.
Is there a such thing as too much stash!?!?
Nope!!!
What has been the worse thing you have done while sewing something?
Years ago I made the flower girl dress for a wedding. The kind with the petals are in between fabric and organza but I didnt use the correct stitch and you guessed it by the end of the wedding the petals were everywhere!!LOL They blended in though cause the flower petals that they had in their baskets were the same petals on the floor.
When you mess up a project, do you feel bad or do you just move on? I hate it when i mess up a project I really wanted.
How many patterns do you have!?!? Too many I need to get rid of some.
What is your sewing process!?
Typically I look for inspiration: patterns, celebrities, or something in a boutique or store. Then I find a pattern and/or fabric.
Is there wrong with being inspired by celebs?? Nope. I also love Michelle!!
Do you offer advice on other peoples projects?? Yup
Do you accept advice/ constructive critisim on your projects??
Other than my fellow bloggers. I dont know anyone who sews. (Sad I know) So my constructive critism comes from my husband. I always see flaws in my sewing.
Do you think it makes you a better sewer??? Only if you accept it.
Posted by: DD | April 29, 2009 at 10:12 AM
I don't sew, so...sorry!! LOL
But I love that you love it so much!
Posted by: Cheryl | April 29, 2009 at 10:42 AM
Whoa - this is like a sewing meme, I feel like I am blogging on your blog. But here goes:
Do you think clothes are made better if you don't take shortcuts??
Not necess-celery (LOL) as Jim would say. My opinion is that as long as they look good on the outside and not "home-sewn" you're all good.
What kind of shortcuts do you take when sewing if any?
I don't mark everything with tracing paper -for example, I never do those dots on top of the sleeve cap, just sew one line of basting stitches from notch to notch and I'm good. I also don't always cut the notches on neck bands - I know how to make them match up without that and it just wastes time.
Does making BWOF instead of something from the Big 4 make you a better sewer?
Again, I'd say there's no direct cause and effect. If you want to sew from Burda, knock your socks off - if not, don't.
Are your projects perfect? What will make you rip out and start again??
My projects are not perfect on the inside by a long shot, but I do insist on a perfect fit. That is something that I will not live with - if it's too baggy or tight.
What are you best at when it comes to sewing?
Sewing straight, topstitching, and hemming with the coverstitch machine without measuring or pressing. It's some sort of weird talent. I just eyeball it and it always turns out right.
what is your weak point?
Sewing wovens and figuring out how to adjust woven patterns to get as good of a fit as knits. I also need more work on zippers, buttonholes and pockets as I never got much practice, given that the vast majority of what I've sewn has been knits.
How many times will you make a TNT?
Until I'm sick of it. That could be awhile. I agree that it always looks different in different fabric, and I love knowing at the outset that the fit will be perfect once I've gotten it that way (by a combo of adjusting the length, figuring out the right size, and/or sewing a few seams 3/8" instead of 5/8".)
What tips do you have for making jeans?!
No help for ya! Let me know what you find out as I'd like to make them too.
Do you use the blind hem feature on your machine!?
I did it once and it worked ok but was a pain in the rear. Hence my purchase of a blind hemming machine, which I hear works much better and easier.
Is there a such thing as too much stash!?!?
My approach is - buy as much as you can afford and like. If you aren't going to sew it (my situation with some of my old woven purchases) get rid of it. Get rid of leftover fabric too.
What has been the worse thing you have done while sewing something? Could you save your project?
Made a hole in it while ripping a seam. Tossed it.
When you mess up a project, do you feel bad or do you just move on?
Not really, because I only sew fabrics I love in TNT patterns. The first time I make something, I don't expect to love it so I make it in a fabric I wouldn't be devastated to lose.
How many patterns do you have!?!?
A two drawer file cabinet full.
What is your sewing process!?
First I pick the pattern and figure out which size to make by looking at all the finished measurements on the tissue. Next I separate the pattern tissue with a separate rotary cutter I use just for paper, put the pieces I'm not going to use in a ziploc bag and trim the pieces I will use to the right size. I then pick the fabric and wash it, then cut it out. Usually I sew it the next day. I do the easy parts of the pattern first - sewing sleeve seams, etc. as long as it doesn't impact the end result. Usually I sew in the sleeves and do all the hems at the same time. It usually takes me two sewing sessions to finish something.
Is there wrong with being inspired by celebs??
Nothing wrong with it! A lot of people are. I don't happen to be personally.
Do you offer advice on other peoples projects??
Depends...if asked, I definitely give my opinion.
Do you accept advice/ constructive critisim on your projects?? Do you think it makes you a better sewer???
Yes, I accept it if given- I take it with a grain of salt, especially if the person is more of a "process sewer" than me. I'm a product sewer (and knitter) and am focused on getting something that fits great and is wearable, not fiddling with the insides of the garment for hours. At this point in my sewing career, I could care less about "performance art" type of pieces in sewing or knitting, that are more about the technique than flattering the wearer.
Whew, there it is!! Hope you were up for all of that!

I pretty much agree with everything Neecha said about messing up and buying patterns based on fashion trends. My blog is new and I haven't posted my items yet. I don't have anything I'm that proud to share yet (that should change soon...maybe even today). If anything I will post a boo boo and how I managed to fix it (if that's possible).
Posted by: Sew-Ann | April 29, 2009 at 12:10 PM
Do you think clothes are made better if you don't take shortcuts??
No - Someone's short cut could be your tried and true technique. I think it really depends on how well the garment holds up.
What kind of shortcuts do you take when sewing if any?
I think of them as techniques. I've been using the Islander Zipper technique to insert zippers. I bought the DVD at Sewing Expo and love it.
Does making BWOF instead of something from the Big 4 make you a better sewer?
No.
Are your projects perfect? Not even close!
What will make you rip out and start again?? Pinches and puckers in the seam. If I've sewn the wrong pieces together.
What are you best at when it comes to sewing?
I'm persistant. I keep on trying until I get it as close to right as possible.
what is your weak point?
Sleeves right now are kicking my butt!
How many times will you make a TNT?
I haven't found a TNT yet. I'm working on that.
What tips do you have for making jeans?! I'm about to make the Jalie pattern. SOON lol. NONE.
Do you use the blind hem feature on your machine!? Yes. It's great!
Is there a such thing as too much stash!?!?
For me...yes! I like having a small statch. Less than 20 cuts of fabric. Anymore than that makes me feel a little over whelmed.
What has been the worse thing you have done while sewing something? Could you save your project?
Sewed the zipper at the hem of the skirt. DOH!
When you mess up a project, do you feel bad or do you just move on?
I get frustrated then I go on the hunt to learn the technique I need.
How many patterns do you have!?!?
118
What is your sewing process!? Select the pattern or fabric. Buy the notions. Make a muslin and correct the fit. Cut the fabric pieces and lining or interface. Sewing in stages at night. Enjoy the new garment.
Is there wrong with being inspired by celebs?? Not at all.
Do you offer advice on other peoples projects?? Not unless they ask and I'm still a beginner so I don't have that much to add.
Do you accept advice/ constructive critisim on your projects??
I don't want advice unless I ask for it.
Do you think it makes you a better sewer??? If I ask for advice, I'm sometimes exposed to new techniques and books which is good. Negative feedback is okay if they aren't critizing me. If they are citizing me then they can just kiss my...well you know.

Dang girl, you ask a lot of questions! I'm not going to answer them all, but I'll tell you this - anything in your process that makes you happy with the finished product is OK in my book. I think you have a great attitude about it all and it shows in your finished work. Not always perfect? None of us are and even the best I've talked to have made mistakes. Sometimes silly dumb mistakes at that!
I usually take shortcuts if I'm in a huge hurry (like I made my best friend's prom dress back in high school and we ran out of time so we used clear packing tape to hem it). Right now I'm in knitting mode since I've finally gotten good enough that I feel confident, so I haven't bought much in the way of patterns or fabric. The only fabric I've bought in months has been what I'm gonna be wearing to my mom's wedding.
Oh, and hemming SUCKS! I can use the blind hemmer on my machine, but it takes forever to set it up - most of the time I just do my hemming by hand if I want it invisible. Makes it less of a chore because then I can catch up on Grey's Anatomy or CSI or watch my baby learn to walk and be productive at the same time.

Are you sure, you want the answer to all questions in a comment? There'll be a lot of reading for you... ;)
- Shortcuts... what are shortcuts? ;) I think in sewing is not really such a thing as "right" or "wrong". It's more the question what you want. What pattern, what material, what occasion... A costume for one night, a top for one holiday, a night dress or a tailored jacket I intend to wear for the next ten years. Is it wool that can shrink or am I working with a polyesterfabric that will not iron well. Is it a gift I want to put special care in or is it something quick for myself? And, last but not least, which are the techniques you get along with best? (For example I work more accurate with all SA the same width than with marking my sewing line.)
Burda, Big 4, Sewing books... nothing is better than the other. Just different.
So any new technique you try will make you a better sewer. Because it teaches you for what occasion it will be the most appropriate technique. The more you know, the better.
Call it sewing wisdom, if you want. *g*
- Perfection... Well, I always try with the maximum aim of perfection. Because I am clumsy I have to. There will be enough inaccuracy coming up on the way. So.. no, I never have a perfect piece. Something will go wrong. but I try to make this happen as late as possible in the process.
Whether I rip will mostly depend on whether I think making it better the next time is realistic. Like when I've understood WHY it went wrong. If I don't think it'll come out better after ripping, I usually live with it. Unless this is possible. I once put in the sleeves in jacket wrong. Right sleeve on left side... I noticed this, after having cut back all seam allowances and after doing a lot of topstitching.
It took me two days to accept, I had to take it out again. And I had to resew it by hand, because working accurate with a SA of partially only 3 - 4 mm... for me impossible to do this with a sewing machine. (I think this is also the worsed mistake I made in sewing.)
- Weak or strong... hm... I think there is nothing that I haven't done wrong at least one time. And usually unexpectedly after having it done right without a problem ten times.
- TNT, no I never make that. Maybe the result will be something totally different in the end. But I am not willing to throw away something after I have invested so much time. But I often do a muslin, to determine problems in advance.
- Jeans... well patience. Good thread for topstitching, a machine that runs well and just patience. And a muslin... did it last year, now I have my perfect Jeans pattern.
- Blind hem feature on the machine... already my grandmother thought this takes more time for preparation with a poorer result than doing it by hand. So I'm hemming by hand.
- Too much stash... well, as long as you do not have to throw out your kids, your hubby or your sewing book collections... it's okay.
(But it's not okay to ask other people about the true size of their stash. Nor the number of patterns they have. ;) Actually, I don't know and I do not want to count. I have more than two years of BWOF, several Patrones, some Knip,... that makes a big amount of patterns.)
- If I mess up something I do feel bad, but only until I realize a way to make it work. (Call it "challenge", but can take some days or weeks to find a way out.) Or at least good enough. (And knowing which mistake to avoid next time.)
- Inspiration: nothing wrong in beeing inspired by celebs. If that's what inspires you it's great. Any inspirations brings out creativity.
- Critisism and advice..... yes, I appreciate constructive critisism. I will think it over and I am well able to decide, whether I will follow it. Or not. (Luckily I also have sewing friends around I can ask.) Giving advice is another thing. If I really think the other person wants to hear the truth. Most people (so is my experience) prefer to get only positive feedback. If they are happy with what they have done... why should I disappoint them? No one has to follow MY standards. Those are only valid for myself.
For myself... yes, I think it makes me a better sewer. Even though I might not agree to all critique, it shows me another way to look on my stuff. And that is always interesting.

I absolutely hate hemming, anything else I can handle. I hate hemming sleeves too, I think I hate it so much also because it has to be perfect, nothing looks more homemade than bad stitching seen from the outside.

No it isn't. I can't recall being very inspired often. I may like something and it might trigger something I don't realize.

If they ask I do. But I tend to imply nicely. Some people can't take any criticism.
Do you accept advice/ constructive critisim on your projects??
If it's done tactful. Some people don't know how to give good advice.
Do you think it makes you a better sewer???
I try to take bad news and find something positive and use it.
I wish I could have read all the replies.

I just love your blog.
I love the blind hem on my sewing machine and I use it religiously. Learn to use it. You'll love it.
I'll make a TNT as many times as I want and if nobody likes it, I don't give a crap.
I love sewing unlined jackets and think it's what I'm best at. I like them unlined because I don't usually wear a blouse underneath and with a lining it's just too darn hot.
If I mess up a project...I haven't in so long but I'd just toss it and move on.
The worse thing I did while sewing was when I first got a serger about 28 years ago, I cut right up the front of a blouse. It was near the bottom so I just used some stitch witchery on the wrong side with another piece of fabric and wore the blouse tucked in. No harm, no foul!
I don't worry about criticism of my garments because honestly, I'm the best seamstress I know.
Right now I have too much stash. I've got to sew more but all of a sudding my mojo is waning. Gotta try and get it back. Maybe if I stayed off the computer that would help...LOL

LOL, so many questions!!! I'll just answer a few then, lol! I almost never take shortcuts... And I love challenges... And BWOF made me a better sewist because it was the only pattern magazine around in a long time...
