I took the plunge and joined The Great Coat Sew-Along that Marji has started up. wanted to make a coat last year and never got around to it. Well, this was the perfect opportunity to "get it done".
I am SO very excited about making my first coat. I have already been planning for my fall wardrobe so this is just right on time lol. I know it's not even summer yet but hey lol.
I am planning on making two coats. I might possibly add in a third (lighter weight jacket) but that has yet to be decided....I have a few more days to make up my mind lol.
First up is Vogue 8438
I'm making view a out of a lipstick red Flannel coating I purchased from Gorgeous Fabrics last year.
I also want to make Butterick 4665
I want to make view c. I thought about making it black but I already have a black rtw coat in my closet. so I might go for a colbalt blue ;-) I'll decide on that a little bit later lol.
So there you have it. I'm super excited about my first coat, my first sew-along and all the techniques I am sure to learn!!
Have a great day guys!
Toodles!
I'm feeling a bit left out of the coat sewalong, but I really only need a coat for about a week a year! I love the Vogue pattern especially - the collar is fantastic.

Great picks!

Great choices! They all have princess seams which is better for fitting (though I believe you won't need much fitting because of your previous experience with the Big4). I also considered making the Vogue-view C but with the sleeves from the AB because I really love the stand up collar and I don't have any coat with this type of collar. This will be a great and enjoyable experience!

Good luck!
Since you sew so much, does this mean that you don't go to the mall anymore? ;)

Now, coats are a REALLY practical thing up here in Chicago, but I'm not ready to commit to sewing one just yet. I wanted to check out the SAL (sew along) blog but it says it's only open to invited readers. I like the idea of SAL blogs though!

I just bought the same Butterick pattern but I don't know if I am ready to take the coat plunge yet. I'll be watching your progress.

I love the butterick one... and I think the colbalt blue would be a lovely break from the norm.

I love the Vogue pattern. As for the Butterick, I think Cobalt blue will look lovely with your coloring. Yep, that is YOUR color.
